Since then, multiple national trackers point to sustained salience of disaster risk: the United States set a new record with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">28 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in 2023<\/a>; a majority of adults report recent local exposure to extreme weather\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">71% say their community experienced at least one event in the past year<\/a>; and concern about global warming remains near record highs (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gallup<\/a>). Severe convective storms (hail, wind, tornadoes) now account for a large share of high-cost U.S. disasters, contributing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">record 28 billion-dollar events in 2023<\/a> and a recent average near 20 per year, compared with roughly 8.5 in the long-term record (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/access\/billions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA NCEI<\/a>). In the West, wildfire and earthquake worry is most prominent; along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, hurricanes and coastal flooding dominate; the Midwest and parts of the South emphasize tornadoes; and riverine and flash flooding concerns are elevated in parts of the Northeast and Midwest. These patterns align with FEMA\u2019s nationally representative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Household Survey<\/a> and research indicating an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1715927115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eastward shift of tornado risk<\/a> into the Mid\u2011South\/Southeast, where cool\u2011season and nocturnal events add vulnerability. Recent catastrophic floods in the Northeast (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FEMA DR\u20114720, Vermont<\/a>) further illustrate how local experience elevates flood concern and policy focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Despite geographic differences, tornadoes remain a national concern due to their rapid onset and wide geographic footprint, and severe convective storms increasingly drive high-frequency losses. Experience also matters: a majority of Americans report encountering extreme weather locally in the past year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew<\/a>), and high-impact local events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Vermont floods<\/a> can shift community priorities toward preparedness and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disaster Preparedness Tips:<\/strong> Regardless of the threat, preparation is vital. We recommend following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ready.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ready.gov<\/a> guidance and augmenting it with current tools: enable Wireless Emergency Alerts via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/emergency-managers\/practitioners\/integrated-public-alert-warning-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FEMA IPAWS\/WEA<\/a>, program a NOAA Weather Radio, and\u2014where available\u2014use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USGS ShakeAlert<\/a> for earthquake early warning.
